Design4Details Tool
We now know that a garment’s ability to live a second life depends on more than just its fabric. Buttons, zippers, labels, threads, decorations, and finishes all affect a product’s footprint, lifespan, and recyclability. Poorly chosen additions can undo even the best intentions.
Yet only a small number of designers consciously choose more sustainable notions and trims. This can—and should—be easier.
That’s why Flanders District of Creativity, HOGENT FTILab+, Xandres, and Love Tomorrow created the Cheat Sheet Notions & Accessories. With support from Vlaanderen Circulair, it brings together key sustainability insights on the most commonly used notions and materials for (leather) accessories.
Plan with Purpose
For each item, you’ll find:
details on material, origin, composition, use, and end-of-life options
an overview of relevant sustainability labels, with clear explanations
a summary of key quality and testing standards (such as EN or ISO) to better assess durability and lifespan
What can you find in this tool ?
You can use the tool in two convenient formats:
The Cheat Sheet (PDF): a compact guide with clear tables and explanations.
The Comparison Tool (Excel): an interactive tool that allows you to compare notions and decide for yourself how much weight you give to environmental, social, and animal-welfare aspects.
The Tools :
The Cheat Sheet was developed as part of the Design for Details project, with the support of Vlaanderen Circulair within the framework of the Targeted Call Design 4 Circularity 2024.
